Virtual Boy

Nintendo's ambitious failure. A "portable" 32-bit console that displayed true 3D graphics in monochromatic red and black.

Legacy & History

Released in 1995. It caused eye strain, wasn't portable, and was discontinued in less than a year. However, it remains a fascinating piece of VR history.

Cultural Impact

A cautionary tale in the industry about prioritizing gimmick over comfort. However, Wario Land on VB is widely considered one of the best platformers Nintendo ever made, tragically stuck on bad hardware.

Modern Legacy

It was Nintendo's first foray into VR, a dream they wouldn't revisit until the Labo VR Kit and 3DS.

Under the Hood

The display used a pair of oscillating mirrors to scan a single column of red LEDs across the user's field of view at high speed. This mechanical scanning created a full 2D image with stereoscopic depth. It was a true 32-bit RISC system, technically more powerful than the SNES, but crippled by its display tech.
