Game Boy

The brick that started it all. Simple, durable, and with battery life that lasted forever, it put a true gaming experience in your pocket.

Legacy & History

Designed by Gunpei Yokoi and released in 1989, the Game Boy bundled with Tetris became a global phenomenon, proving that gameplay mattered more than color graphics.

Cultural Impact

The Game Boy created the portable gaming market. Before it, handhelds were simple LCD games (Game & Watch). After it, they were full consoles. Pokemon Red/Blue, released late in its life, revitalized the system and created a multi-billion dollar franchise.

Modern Legacy

It proved that portability and battery life are king in the handheld market, a philosophy Nintendo follows to this day with the Switch.

Under the Hood

The Game Boy CPU is a hybrid between the Intel 8080 and the Zilog Z80. It lacks some Z80 instructions but adds others. Its simplicity was its strength: by sticking to a monochrome, non-backlit screen, Nintendo achieved 30+ hours of battery life on 4 AA batteries, crushing the technically superior but power-hungry Lynx and Game Gear.
