Legacy & History
Released in 1990, the SNES engaged in a fierce "console war" with the Sega Genesis. It eventually won out globally thanks to hits like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and Final Fantasy VI.
Cultural Impact
The SNES era is often cited as the "Golden Age" of RPGs. It proved that video games could tell complex, emotional stories (Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger) and provide cinematic experiences.
Modern Legacy
The SNES controller introduced the "diamond" face button layout (A, B, X, Y) and shoulder buttons (L and R), which became the industry standard for decades.
Under the Hood
The SNES introduced "Mode 7," a graphics mode that allowed a background layer to be rotated and scaled, creating pseudo-3D effects seen in F-Zero and Mario Kart. Its audio was powered by the Sony SPC700, a dedicated 8-channel sound chip that used compressed samples, giving SNES music a rich, orchestral quality distinct from the FM synthesis of the Genesis.
