Legacy & History
Released in 1999. Despite being a fantastic piece of hardware with great SNK titles, it couldn't survive the Pokemon-fueled dominance of the Game Boy Color.
Cultural Impact
A favorite of hardcore gamers and collectors. It showed that a handheld could do justice to complex fighting game mechanics.
Modern Legacy
The "clicky stick" is still regarded as one of the best handheld inputs ever made.
Under the Hood
The NGPC used a 16-bit Toshiba CPU, making it quite capable for its size. Its standout feature was the micro-switched joystick, which used actual mechanical switches (clicking sounds) for precise 8-way control, crucial for the fighting games that made up its library.
