Legacy & History
Released in 1990 by SNK. It was marketed as a 24-bit system. The hardware was identical to the MVS arcade cabinets, meaning zero compromises on ports.
Cultural Impact
It created the "pro-sumer" market in gaming. Owning a Neo Geo was a status symbol. It kept the 2D sprite art style alive and thriving well into the 3D era.
Modern Legacy
The Neo Geo library remains the gold standard for 2D fighting games and run-and-gun shooters. Its "arcade perfect" philosophy is now the goal of all emulation.
Under the Hood
The Neo Geo used the same Motorola 68000 CPU as the Genesis but clocked faster (12 MHz) and paired with custom graphics chipsets that could push a massive number of huge sprites. It didn't use tilemaps for backgrounds like other consoles; everything was a sprite strip. This allowed for the gigantic, detailed characters SNK fighters are famous for.
