While the PlayStation moved to CD audio, the Nintendo 64 retained cartridges. This limited storage capacity meant music had to be sequenced (MIDI-like) rather than streamed. This resulted in a distinct "N64 Sound," heavily reliant on specific instrument sample sets (often Roland Sound Canvas) and allowed for dynamic music transitions (iMusic) that CD audio couldn't handle seamlessly.
