Arcade cabinets operated under a different set of acoustic requirements known as "Attract Mode." The music had to be loud, dynamic, and piercing enough to be heard over the cacophony of a crowded arcade. This led to the "Loudness War" of the 90s and the development of specialized sound hardware like Capcom’s QSound.
